Anatolian Shepherds

History

When we first got into the alpaca business, we realized that it was important to have a guard animal for our alpacas. Too often we'd heard stories of coyotes or other menacing animals attacking alpacas in the field or of adult alpacas letting out their aggression on their counterparts. We sought to find a way to prevent such attacks but were stymied when we didn't want to introduce a llama into the mix. And even though llamas, by their nature, are more aggressive than alpacas, short of grunting and spitting, they can do little to prevent an attack.

Then our friends at a nearby farm told us they'd had wonderful success with a particular breed of dog, the Anatolian shepherd. Not only did they keep peace in the pasture, but these dogs routinely barked when unannounced guests came too close to the fence or when any other unwelcome guests (man or beast) showed up. Add this warning system to the dogs' incredible strength and speed, and you can imagine how protected the animals are. Anatolian Shepherds are self sufficient and eager to work to protect your livestock

The Anatolian Shepherd has many advantages as a field animal. In addition to their guarding instincts, the dogs have thick winter coats that allows them to sleep comfortably even in snowy outdoor conditions. Although a large breed, the Anatolian Shepherd has a long life span.
