When Steve and Claudia Coleman sold their suburban Californian house in 2003, they had dreams of creating the ideal farm, a pastoral haven with its fill of alpacas, chickens, cows, and even a vegetable stand. Upon their arrival in the summer, they hoped that within a year, they'd be all set to go, but how wrong they were!
The house they bought, for one, needed a few more repairs than expected as it was originally built in the 1800s. The pasture fence needed to be repaired or replaced in many places, the water and sewage system needed to be planned, and the layout need to be finalized. Add to that the endless supply of equipment necessary to operate a farm, and you can well imagine how overwhelmed they felt.
The saving grace came from both the wonderful animals they found, and the community that rallied around them, the kind and giving people who make up the towns of Topsham and Corinth. It was only through their suggestions, training, tools and hard work that Tabor Valley Farms began to flourish.
This summer marks the Colemans' third year in Vermont, and it promises to be the best yet. The alpaca herd has progressed wonderfully, with the animals receiving high praise at the New England Coastal Classic Alpaca show.
We always welcome guests and visitors to our farm! Call ahead or fill out a form on our contact page. Let us know if you would like more information about the area in general or alpacas.
